What Is the Government Battery Rebate?

The Government Battery Rebate is a federal initiative designed to make home battery systems more affordable for Australian households, small businesses, and community organizations.

Officially launched on 1 July 2025, it provides a discount on the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery, typically around 30% off the total installed price. This rebate is applied directly at the point of sale through your installer, so you benefit immediately without having to apply yourself.

This scheme is delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) the same framework that previously supported solar panel rebates, and is open until 1 May 2026.

Discount Based on System Size

Eligible battery systems (5 kWh – 100 kWh nominal capacity) receive a discount on the upfront cost based on their usable capacity. The way it’s structured means:

  • You get savings on the first 50 kWh of usable battery capacity.

  • The rebate is typically applied through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which installers trade to reduce your purchase price at checkout.

Real Savings You Can Expect

While the exact rebate value can vary as market prices for STCs shift, the program aims to deliver roughly 30% off the upfront cost of a home battery system.

Who Is Eligible for Government Battery Rebate?

The battery must be installed on or after 1 July 2025.

Batteries must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list and installed by a certified installer.

It should be connected to your rooftop solar system, either new or existing.
